DOMESTIC ACCIDENTS IN CHILDREN LESS THAN 5 YEARS

SUMMARY
This was a 2-year retrospective study
(August 1, 2015 to July 31, 2017) of 291 children under the age of 5 who were
victims of domestic accidents at CVN and HMK. Domestic accidents are a reality
at CVN and HMK but are less common. The frequency is 1% in external
consultations and 0.59% in hospital. In our study; 55.67% of the children were
between 36 and 59 months old with a male predominance of 61.51%. Mothers with
primary school enrollment were 61.51%. 42.27% of the mothers were farmers. Most
child-victims of domestic accidents (88.32%) live in collective houses. 71.4%
of the children were not guarded by the servants. Domestic accidents occur at
77.32% in daytime, games being responsible for 74.57%. The age of a child and
the level of education of the mother are the associated factors with the
occurrence of domestic accidents. And according to age, falls (58.33%) and burns
(33.33%) are frequent before one year of a child; also from 12 to 23 months, burn
(53.33%) and falls (37.78%) and finally the fall comes at the top from 24 to 59
months with 63.06%. The fall (trauma) accounted for 58.76% and the burn (24.05%)
of the types of domestic accidents. The most common lesions were sores with
61.17%. The lower limbs were the most affected with 41.58%. The first gesture
is made by the parents at 66.67%. Hospital care is 69.42% outpatient and 30.58%
hospitalized. The surgical department is the busiest (62.93%). The fall
(83.34%) and the burn (16.65%) are the two types of domestic accidents
requiring a long hospital stay. The prognosis is good with a cure of 97.59%.
The best treatment for home accidents is prevention.
